Heavy Metal - dynamic, aggressive metal, groove oriented, accompanied by lots of hooks, producing a sound that’s smooth and crunchy at the same time!
COLMA (formerly syphon) has penetrated the Northern California music scene in a short time. Performing quite frequently throughout the greater California and Nevada area. Headlining, as well as, playing the support slot for national acts.
It’s about time, a great sound like this, has finally come out of the Sacramento area.
The groups sound style and musical influences range from BLACK SABBATH to TOOL, with a vocal range that can go from JIM MORRISON to TESTAMENT in a flash. The diversity is fabulous, yet not drifting from their primary root. The song writing dynamics mysteriously have you chanting along to words you’d never heard before. The response has been very impressive. The local nightclubs are packed with huge turnouts.
SYPHON was featured on the KRXQ 98 Rock compilation CDs (Sac. Rocks Vol.9 “Who’s Next?” 2002, & Sac. Rocks Vol. 10 “A Decade to Remember”2003). Combined with some airplay throughout the region ( KWOD 106.5, KXOA 93.7, & KDOT 104.5).
Current endorsements and equipment sponsors for the group include EMG pickups and ESP Guitars.
The talent of this well tuned machine called COLMA include Randy Valdez (guitar), Steve Seidel (bass), Jim Atkinson (vocals), and Joel Slusser (drums). Each player a seasoned musician, that has previously cultivated a name for, and recorded with, such projects as Deepwell, Brutal Groove, Trunk, Borg-9, Habeas Corpus and LDK . Collectively members have supported national acts such as the Deftones, Ice T’s Body Count, Testament, Corrosion of Conformity, Snot, Skinlab, Machine Head, Exodus, Gary Hoey, Vinnie Moore, & L.A. Gunns. Each of these bands producing demo tapes that would lead to a wide spread following among the Sacramento underground scene. Many times earning multiple nominations for, and even winning a Sacramento Area Music Award (SAMMIE) along the way.
Some members of COLMA have also gained tour experience from playing in Brougham (Warner Bros.) headlining on a national tour across the United States, along with opening for acts like Cypress Hill, Cold and Limp Bizkit (the Napster Tour).
COLMA truly has a lot to offer as a professional act. The band is once again back in the studio writing and recording new material to come out Spring 2004.
