Ground
Gasping For Regard...
August 27, 2001
The brand new four track disc from one of the newest bands to hit the South Bay, Ground, offers up their hybrid sound of hardcore mixed with a slower tempo'd style that creates this heavy-handed bludgeon of sound. Featuring drummer John Lazarus, vocalist Jason Ingram, guitarist Mike McClatchey, guitarist Peter Layman, and bassist Dave Robertson (although Robertson didn't perform on this recorded effort), Ground has created four extended trips of both clarity and just sheer hardcore power.
Of the four tracks, "Breakdown", "Anxiety of Influence", "Wayland's Infraction", and "Spirit Collage", each brings their own identity to the Ground sound, with the opening track "Breakdown" and the closing track "Spirit Collage" providing some of the major highlights. The first track opens right into an Ingram led roll and proceeds to walk through a series of heavy distortion and cleaner moods while the last song of these four opens up the Ground style even further.
This is a solid, almost bordering on totally impressive, opening effort for these guys. The production value of this disc only suffers here and there as some of Ingram's cleaner vocals waver from loud to soft in association with the guitars and bass behind him, but this will certainly play loud. With so many change-ups, tempo stretches, and mood shifters, these guys should do quite well with this much matured sound. Pick this one up for sure.
