Embrace This Misery

Attaining a pretty high level of popularity before ending the run as a band, Dementia, which featured, at one time or another, vocalist Paul Laughlin, guitarist "Amp" Gouvea, bassist Rod Simpkins, and drummer Joel, produced a heavy, gritty, rap/rock/core type of sound that had some solid hooks and good power. Their full length disc, “Embrace This Misery” did well as it brought the band’s solid sound to the forefront. In their lifetime, Dementia was a two time Sammie Award Winner (Sacto Area Music Awards) and had the fortune to share the stage with some extremely prominent major bands. After this band dissolved, Gouvea would go on to join former Hitch vocalist dB and The Council’s former bassist Mike Ottovich in a new project entitled Phrenik.

The Last Hero

This is the story of three high school kids coming together pretty much by accident. They are now, and forever, DesoLit. Out of a "DESOLIT" place called Manteca, these three kids have captured a unique but hard sound. They have stuck to the true roots of ROCK N ROLL, yet have incorporated those roots in to today's sound.

These kids have been together for over 2 years. Just not too long ago they decided to take it to the next level and become very serious about rock n roll. They began collaborating writing music and lyrics with the goal of recording a CD. That goal became a reality. In August of 2003, after endless hours of rehearsals, DesoLit felt it was time to enter the studio. The result was a four-song demo.

Just recently, DesoLit was chosen as one of the bands to perform at Rock-96.7's Royal Rumble. DesoLit got the call to participate in the Royal Rumble less than 24 hours before showtime. DesoLit submitted their CD to the radio station just days before the show date. After the call, and not rehearsing for over two weeks, DesoLit stood by their motto, "WHATEVER IT TAKES," and showed up the next day ready to rock. DesoLit is one of the top 24 bands in the Central Valley who was chosen out of over 250 bands to perform in the Royal Rumble. They also gave away 50 CDs to the audience as well as other bands, not to mention they had to wait over 8 hours before hitting the stage.

DesoLit has been kinda busy performing at other places such as Stifler's for 209 Rock and the Loud Festival, the harvest festival in Manteca, their high school, private parties, and more. One thing you can be sure of is when you go to see DesoLit perform, you will leave with a free CD. DesoLit is known for giving away FREE CDs while other bands sell their own. On October 23rd of this year DesoLit was interviewed on Rock 96.7 on the Foley show.

At this time, DesoLit's short-term goal is to go back into the studio and record a full-length album. They believe that rock 'n roll should come straight from the heart and straight from the soul. As performers, they totally enjoy playing in front of crowds. The ultimate payoff is to look into the crowd and see the people singing their songs along with them.

DesoLit is:

Michael Gualderama (guitars, vocals)
Jason Thornhill (bass guitars)
Chris Fox (drum kits)

After more than a year and a half together as a core unit of guitarist Mike McClatchey, drummer John Lazarus, and vocalist Nik Hajny, South Bay act Dielab officially called it quits in late October / early November of 2000. Outside of the three aforementioned core members, this band had a revolving door of members around them including numerous different bass guitarists and several second guitarists. Some of the names to filter through this band around McClatchey, Hajny, and Lazarus were guitarist Wes Reed, who actually was with the band for a considerable amount of time, bassist Peter Vargo, who stuck around for a short term, and guitarist Mindi Johnson, who performed a collective of two shows before the eventual band demise. Dielab recorded one unreleased CD entitled "Distance" which featured several of their more popular tunes including signature track "Bloodletting". Each of the band members will most definitely pop up in the scene again with different projects.

Formed in the late 1990's in the South Bay, Dilemma brought together so many different elements of music into one complete package, effectively molding a metal edge with a melody and underlying rhythm that drove their entire catalog. Featuring at one time or another, guitarist / vocalist Andrew Earley, bassist / vocalist Ryan Mahan, guitarist Brandon Rose, drummer Matt Hammond, and keyboardist Guillaume Lam, Dilemma put together a rough recording of a couple of songs and were on the path to producing a full length when they eventually met their demise. Come mid-2001, the band dissolved.

Once one of the promising young death-end driven bands of the East Bay, Divide saw their demise in 2000 with each of their members moving on to other projects. The band, together, released a recording which included some strong work with some heavy ended guitars and throat style. Two of the more prominent names to come from this project includes bassist Andrew Sale (who after this project relocated to the Chico region and hooked up with the impressive grind metal act Bloodgeon) and guitarist Chris State (who can now be found in the much different sounding popular act Darkside).

Coming out of the Concord area and featuring a bouncy, groove based sound with a hint of hip-hop in the mix, Doomfinger came together as a fully functioning unit on the scene in 1999/2000 and hit into many different live shows. Featuring drummer John Marshall, bassist Scott Proctor, guitarist Range Strunk, and vocalist Jim Gauthier, Doomfinger started to really roll in 2000, performing bigger shows and putting together their EP recording entitled "Demos".

Towards the end of 2000 and into 2001, Doomfinger hit some problems as Gauthier faced some health issues and the band started to slow their live appearances. Before too long, Doomfinger went into hiding, never returning to the scene again.

Sacramento region natives Drone were long time favorites of the area, but recently broke up with many of the members moving on to another project entitled Circle of 5ths. Look for former Drone members guitarist Steve Mahoney, bassist Mike Mc Nellis, guitarist Drew Rosen, and drummer Thommy Jacobs as they are currently playing throughout the NorCal region. Drone released two full length discs entitled "Symbiosis" and "Machines of Tolerance" as well as two cassette only releases including "A New Utopia" and "Holiday Cheer".

Based in the Fairfield/Vacaville region of northern California, Dystratic came together to push new boundaries for heavy music. Pat Hanek, James Hopkins, Chris Winstead and Ryan Fuller make up what is the core of this driving force.

With an active fan base and presence from the well-established Northern California music scene to Portland, Oregon, Dystratic is ready to work hard to expand their audience to the furthest extent.

“Our purpose is to spread a distinctive sound that will have a part in helping to deal with and reflect on the memories and emotions that are ever present in day to day life. In such a diverse world we all need outlets to express our emotions. We hope that our music can help to achieve this foundation.”

Between Smoke and Fire

Formed in 1996 by two high school friends Eric Stewart and Rob LaRosa, the band was formed merely as a way to pass time after long days of school. Quickly both guitar players’ skills began to take shape as they learned from each other, and thus Fellatia was created. After many nights and afternoons, the two guitar players’ abilities led them to seek one thing; making music for themselves and their friends (which is still the philosophy of the band to this very day, to create music for us and our fans).

Next they sought after a drummer, to fill in the percussion side of the hand. Long time friend Brandon Harper decided to give a try at drums. Brandon lived around the corner from the two guitarists, so it seemed like a perfect match, but there was only one catch; Brandon had never played drums before. Brandon thought it would be ideal to invest in a small kit, and began learning simple techniques. After many jam sessions the hand began forming the basis for sme of the earlier material Fellatia had produced.

Finally it was tine to round out the sound with sonic deep bass and a set of vocal chords to match. After a short stint and one recording "A New Beginning," with ex bassist/vocalist Eric Olson, the band was still not satisfied with the current sound and what they were reaching fix. A few months later the hand was introduced to Jason Lewis through mutual friends. Jason had already been in a band before as a bass player (and had also lived within two blocks from the other band members, bill did not know them). After not seeing the hand for some time, Jason ran into Brandon one day at a local drug store. Upon speaking for several minutes, Brandon had expressed a need for a bassist and vocalist for their hand and asked Jason if he would consider trying out. With little hesitation, Jason brought over his equipment and began playing with the other members. Things were rough at first especially since Jason had never sung before, but as with anything he grew into his voice and became more comfortable with his own vocals.

The hand eventually moved into a studio in San Lorenzo, (which they still occupy today). After many months and much hard work it was time to record a four song demo called "19 Minutes of Silence" and a year later, another entitled "Getting Ahead". This was to help them gain exposure and break into the scene. With much critical acclaim it was time to chisel out a new album. Released in 2001 the full length disk "Hard to Swallow" has been hailed as one of the best local albums of the year from various webzines and college radio stations. The album to this day continues to sell in local music stores.

Upon release of the album longtime hand member Brandon Harper parted ways with the band, leaving a void in the friendships and the music that was developed. After some thought of who could be a tight fit and intrical part of the band, it was decided that Nick Benigno (a long time friend of the band) would be the best candidate to fill to position. With his skill and talent, we knew he could bring forth a new style and many new influences to what is already a well-diverse band.

As in many scenarios things sometimes seem too good to be true...Fellatia was on the verge of breaking out onto a major independent record label, until the unthinkable happened. July 28, 2002 will for ever be remembered as the day when Fellatia came to a As in many -scenarios things sometimes seem too good to he true...Fellatia was on the verge of breaking out onto a major independent record label, until the unthinkable happened. July 28. 2002 will for ever be remembered as the day when Fellatia came to a screeching halt. Long time founding band member, friends and brothers to the band, Rob LaRosa and John Pitman were tragically killed in an automobile accident. Now the band seemed to be such a small part of what our ultimate goal was. With all of the time and friendships evolved it was hard to maintain a positive attitude about the band. After the grieving, and healing, which will forever leave a permanent scar in our minds, it was time to continue.

With tragedy, skill and an overwhelming desire to show the world our strength, the Fellatia train will continue to run and roll over city to city producing heavy as hell material for our friends and fans and to show what we are here to do.

Coming into existence in late 1999 and performing their first ever live show in April 2000, South Bay act Fetus By The Pound was a pure death meets black metal band that ranged in power and precision and typically had well executed sets. Featuring guitarist Stefan Korienik, guitarist Ivan Munguia, bassist Jay Sirios, drummer Justin Sousa, The Fetus pulled together their debut and only recording, "Fetal Carnage", in the Summer 2000 and followed that up with an opening slot on the local Cannibal Corpse show.

By the end of 2000, Sousa had departed from the band and was replaced in early 2001 by Harry Cantwell (ex-Myopia). The band was relatively quiet through 2001 and eventually met the end of the line with a final show during the Silicon Valley Metalfest in the South Bay in October 2001.
